How many amps does a 2000 watt inverter draw?
At its full 2,000 W, an inverter draws about 185.2 A from a 12 V battery at 90% efficiency — about 92.6 A at 24 V.
How to work it out
- Running: 2,000 W × (1 + 0%) = 2,000 W → 2,000 W inverter
- Surge: 2,000 W running + biggest start-up extra = 2,000 W
- Battery current: 2,000 W ÷ 90% ÷ 12 V = 185.2 A (185.2 A at 2,000 W)
Two thousand watts is a popular RV and van inverter size because it runs a microwave or coffee maker with headroom. At 12 V, its full-load current is the reason battery banks and cables for these systems get so heavy.

- At 12 V this inverter can pull well over 150 A. Many larger systems use 24 V or 48 V to halve or quarter that current.
- For motors, compressors, CPAP machines and electronics, choose a pure sine wave inverter.

What to know about a 2000 W inverter’s current
- 185 A needs a serious battery. Two 100 Ah LiFePO4 batteries in parallel share it at about 93 A each — inside the 100 A continuous Victron recommends, without much margin.
- 24 V halves it. About 93 A at 24 V, and about 46 A at 48 V. For a new system this size, a 24 V bank is worth considering.
- Mostly it won’t run flat out. A 1,200 W microwave pulls about 111 A, a 600 W load about 56 A. Full-rating current is the design limit, not the everyday draw.
- Startup surges. A motor start can briefly exceed the continuous current; the battery and its BMS have to tolerate the peak too.
The bank that carries it is on what size battery bank for a 2000W inverter and the runtime on how long a 200Ah battery lasts with a 2000W inverter. The smaller size is on how many amps a 1000 watt inverter draws.

What you’ll need
- Pure sine wave inverter, 2000–3000 WPremium price
For microwaves, coffee makers and power tools. At 12 V these draw hundreds of amps, so the battery and cabling matter as much as the inverter.

About 1.28 kWh rated in a box roughly the size of a group 24–31 lead-acid battery at around half the weight. Check the BMS discharge limit and whether it can charge below freezing.

Clamps around one cable to read DC amps without breaking the circuit — checks what an inverter or fridge actually draws from the battery. Make sure it says DC; many cheap clamps read AC only.
