How many amps does a 1000 watt inverter draw?
At its full 1,000 W, an inverter draws about 92.6 A from a 12 V battery, assuming 90% efficiency — about 46.3 A at 24 V and 23.1 A at 48 V. At lighter loads the current falls in proportion.
How to work it out
- Running: 1,000 W × (1 + 0%) = 1,000 W → 1,000 W inverter
- Surge: 1,000 W running + biggest start-up extra = 1,000 W
- Battery current: 1,000 W ÷ 90% ÷ 12 V = 92.6 A (92.6 A at 1,000 W)
An inverter draws what its load needs, plus its own losses: amps = watts ÷ efficiency ÷ battery volts. So the question is really how much you plug into it. At its full rating, a 1000 W inverter is a heavy load for a 12 V battery.

What to know about a 1000 W inverter’s current
- Less at partial load. Running a 300 W TV and laptop, it draws about 28 A at 12 V; only the full 1,000 W gets it to about 93 A.
- Idle draw when nothing is on. Even with no load, an inverter uses some power; its manual lists the no-load figure. Switch it off when not in use.
- Battery limits. About 93 A sits near the 100 A continuous limit Victron recommends for its 12.8 V 100 Ah LiFePO4. Lead-acid sags and loses capacity at this current.
- Cables and fuses. At this current they must be right. Wire and fuse sizes come from NEC/ABYC ampacity tables and the equipment manual — have a qualified installer check them.
The runtime at that draw is on how long a 100Ah battery lasts with a 1000W inverter. The bigger inverter is on how many amps a 2000 watt inverter draws, and the plain conversion on how many amps is 1000 watts at 12 volts.

What you’ll need
- DC clamp meterMid-range price
Clamps around one cable to read DC amps without breaking the circuit — checks what an inverter or fridge actually draws from the battery. Make sure it says DC; many cheap clamps read AC only.

Enough for a CPAP, laptop, TV and small appliances. Pure sine is the safe choice for anything with a motor or sensitive electronics.

Counts amp-hours in and out, so you see true state of charge instead of guessing from voltage — which barely moves on a LiFePO4 battery until it is nearly empty.
